What is being shared?
Along with this Whatsapp is also going to collect and share your usage statistics, which includes how often you use WhatsApp, What you do during that time, features you use, etc.
And Now Whatsapp is also going to collect your device-level information such as which device model you use, your IP address, mobile network, and even your battery level and consumption. It also collects precise and accurate location data of the user, even if you turn off the GPS location.
What is not being shared?
Our primary concern with the new primary policy is whether WhatsApp is sharing our personal messages with Facebook or not. And WhatsApp has claimed that they won’t be sharing our WhatsApp chats with Facebook. Only some of our personal information will be shared with Facebook and they are collecting and sharing this information for:-
facilitate, support and integrate their activities and improve our services.
Is our data being stored?
Not only that even the messages that are stored for 30 days are end-to-end encrypted not even Whatsapp can read those messages. And if the messages are delivered before the expiry period of 30 days then also they remove these messages from their servers.
How business accounts can exploit our data?
Even though our personal messages are not being shared with Facebook. But the same is not the case with the business conversations that takes place on WhatsApp. First, multiple users may read the messages in conversations with WhatsApp business accounts. Other than that, they may use third-party services to send, store, manage, or process the messages you sent/received from them. And this third-party service provider in most cases going to be Facebook itself, where these messages can be stored permanently.
So should you be Concerned?
I think Yes, even though for now they are they can’t read our personal chats for now, but as these applications are deeply integrated with our lives. The value of even this small amount of information becomes large. With, this information they can further personalize the ads that are displayed to you. Not only the ads are being personalized based on our data they are also continuously refining their algorithms to make us spend even more time on their platforms. And that’s actually harmful to us.
Facebook is just a corporate and their primary concern is earning money. So their main goal is the profit maximisation. And with our personal information they are able to increase their revenue. And even though WhatsApp is not yet using banner ads in its app, but they might start using ads soon. And with nearly 2 billion monthly active users it could be a good source of revenue for Facebook.
I have written a blog on how social media is destroying our lives. These corporate companies use our own data against us. They use our data to target us to make us spend more and more of our time on their websites. You should give this blog a read. It will help you understand how vicious this cycle is.
Is there a way to bypass this?
