Even though these two names sound so similar to each other. They are still completely different from each other. yet they are created keeping different objectives in mind.
The term “UNIX” no longer refers to a single operating system. It is a trademark held by the OpenGroup. OpenGroup certifies whether an operating system is“UNIX” or not. Hence Solaris, HP UX, IBM AIX, Mac OS X etcetera are all certified UNIXes.
Originally Unix was developed as an OS in the Mid 1960’s. But later it also has been developed to only an OS specification, hence it is both of them. now Its primary function was to create standardise code to be used on different architectures. Even today it is used as an OS for servers.
But due to it’s nature of being close sourced. It was not receptive to changes, and modifications suggested by it’s users. Which leads to it’s decline.
Upon careful observation, Linus Torvalds (father of Linux) created the Linux kernel. as He created Linux because he didn’t have money for UNIX. then he thought to make Linux available to everyone for free he thinks that os should be free and then he makes it open-source that he can get comments to make it better
The Main Difference Between Linux and Unix
|1||Linux is open source and is developed by a wide community of developers.||Unix was developed by AT&T Bell Labs and is not open source. hence can’t be edit by individual developers. you will need to get their license to do so|
|2||Linux is completely free to use.||Unix is licensed OS.|
|3||Linux is used in wide varieties from desktop, servers, smartphones to mainframes.||Unix is mostly used on servers, workstations or PCs.|
|4||Bash (Bourne Again SHell) is the default shell for Linux.||Bourne Shell is the default shell for Unix.|
|5||Linux was initially developed for Intel’s x86 hardware processors. Now it supports 20+ processor families.||CUnix supports PA-RISC and Itanium family.|
|6||Ubuntu, Debian GNU, Arch Linux, etc. are it’s example||SunOS, Solaris, SCO UNIX, AIX, HP/UX, ULTRIX etc.|
